John Gonzalez is Colombian-Canadian accordion player, hand percussion player and teacher who specializes in Cumbia & Vallenato, his particular style of playing is heavily influenced by his travels and broad cultural experiences. He also love producing cultural events, where people from different cultures enjoy the diversity of dance/experimental music.
Since the beginning his musical project, Breaking Boundaries, has had the opportunity of sharing their sound in different context as a big band and as a small piece in private and public events all around Vancouver and the islands, festival all around Vancouver, Whistler, Victoria, Squamish and Tofino (Carnaval Del Sol, Vancouver World Music Festival, Surrey Latin Festival, Latin American Film Festival, among others) and big venues (The Orpheum, Science World, Museum of Anthropology, Chan Center, Red Room, Fox Cabaret, The Wise Hall, Hungarian Hall, among others).

Breaking Boundaries Band was born on 2014 in Vancouver, Canada, BC. The essence of this musical project is Colombian folk music, specifically Cumbia & Vallenato. Through the accordion John express the sounds of sacred chants, the Colombian accordion tradition and the sounds of two native indigenous flutes (Millo and Gaita) accompanied by an strong percussion element. These rhythms are famous for infecting people with joy and inviting them to dance.
Breaking Boundaries is happy to perform at any event, small or big, we would accommodate to your needs, being possible to perform as a duo or big band.
Since the Covid-19 we have had to stop some weekly events but we are doing our best to keep the music going. Some performances are happening outdoors meeting the necessary distance requirements, text us for any updates, since every beginning of the week we decided the location of our performance.
